Contribute To The British Comedy Guide

Union Jack Flag Thank you for showing an interest in getting involved in our new website.

The ultimate aim of The British Comedy Guide is to provide an in-depth guide to every British comedy ever made. That's every episode, every character, every actor, every key crew member, every DVD release, every web reference, every bit of news, every everything basically!

With such an ambitious aim, we're clearly going to need a lot of assistance, and we're hoping you may be able to help...

Writing about British comedy can be great fun. Unfortunately, because this is a hobby website, we can't pay for contributions - however getting involved can still be very rewarding. For starters you'll be able to help educate tens of thousands about your favourite comedies. Plus, in some cases, contributing may very well open up exciting new opportunities for you (it does look good on any writer's CV!).

There is no pressure or deadlines involved - this isn't work! If you are interested, it will be completely up to you when and how often you want to submit content.

Listed below are the areas we need help with...

Pre-Launch Tasks
Transferring Existing Content

Transferring Existing Sitcom.co.uk Content

We are currently in the process of transferring all the current sitcom.co.uk content into our new database. This is a long and labourious job, made worse by the fact that a fair bit of the existing content needs improving and/or expanding before it is transferred.

This is probably the hardest role on this page and so is only for the most dedicated of contributors who have a passion for seeing things complete and orderly. You will need to have a real eye for English grammar, spelling, organisation and attention to detail. This isn't the most glamorous of tasks and will probably be a bit labourious (lots of copying and pasting) so we will try and think up a good thank you for those that do help us with this!

Website Tester

Website Tester

When the new website is almost ready to go live we'd like some help putting it through its paces. e.g. looking for spelling mistakes, broken links, display glitches - things like that.

Graphic Artist

Graphic Artist

Do you have an artistic flare when it comes to computer-based graphics? We're looking for some new graphics for our website (e.g. better icons, illustrations to decorate some of our features, banner adverts etc etc). Would you be interested in supplying some?

Comedy Guides
Programme Guides

Programme Guides

If you've contributed to sitcom.co.uk in the past you'll be familiar with this one... we are looking for people to write guides to their favourite comedies (which includes character and episode guides).

Actor / Crew Biographies

Actor / Crew Biographies

We are also looking for background pieces on every actor and crew member for our new profile pages. If you're interested in writing biographies of your favourite stars / writers do let us know.

Researcher

Versatile Researcher

If you have strong research skills, good attention to detail, good English and don't mind what you write about we'd love you to join our task force! We're forming a fairly dedicated team who will be able to help us plug the gaps in our database.

Other Opportunities
DVD Reviewer

DVD Reviewer

We're looking for people to review new (and old) DVD releases. This job has proved to be very popular, so please be aware that you will need very strong English writing skills, as well as a journalistic flair. People who have reviewed DVDs elsewhere are favourable, but ultimately anyone who feels that they fulfil the criteria above is more than welcome to express interest.

News Reporter

News Reporter

We're looking to expand our news team to ensure we provide a more comprehensive and up-to-the-minute news service. This role will involve keeping an eye out for relevant stories (or, even better, seeking them out) and writing up any you do find with all the facts and background and then publishing it on our system as quick as possible.

Schedule

TV and Radio Schedule

In the autumn we will be looking to introduce a TV and radio schedule on our website (comedy only). We've looked to automate this but haven't found anything that works, thus we will be looking for people to manually pick out the comedy programmes from the schedules and input this data into our own schedule system. This is particularly important for regional stations, which sometimes vary their programmes and/or times - BBC One Scotland, for example. (Eventually, we may be interested in overseas schedules - for example BBC America - but not just yet).

Special Skills Jobs
Feature Article

Feature Article Writer

We're looking to provide comedy related comment, opinion and insight on our new website too. If you think you are a strong feature writer or have some insight for us do let us know. Note: ideally you will have some authority in this area - i.e. be connected to the industry in some way, but it's not essential.

Star interviewer

Star Interviewer

From time to time we get the opportunity to interview comedy stars and writers. Our problem is that we sometimes can't make the phone call or press junket (and so the website misses out). We are therefore looking for a few other contributors who might be able to step in and represent the website when we can't. This is a very trusted position so we are looking for very professional contributors here who have excellent journalistic skills (i.e. you need to be able to turn your conversation with the star into a full article).

Video and Audio Production

Video and Audio Production

Eventually (but not yet) we may branch out into podcasts and filming our own comedy (e.g. via our own sketch show project). If you have some knowledge in this arena and might be willing to help when the time comes do please mention this to us so we can bear you in mind.

If any of the above areas sound like something you'd be interested in getting involved with, we'd love to hear from you. Do please get in touch.
