This page provides a guide to the main genres of British comedy. Click on any of these sections to access a list of the comedies in that genre...

Situation Comedy (picture shows: Not Going Out)

Situation Comedy

A humorous radio or television series featuring the reactions of a regular cast of characters to unusual situations, such as misunderstandings or embarrassing coincidences. These comedies are usually centred around a common environment, for example a family home or workplace. List of Sitcoms

Sketch Shows (picture shows: The Armstrong And Miller Show)

Sketch Shows

Episodes of this type of comedy are made up from a series of un-connected short comedy scenes (or 'sketches' / 'skits'). These shows are normally performed by a small group of actors who play multiple roles. The emphasis is very much on a punch-line or character trait. List of Sketch Shows

Stand-Up (picture shows: Michael Macintyre, host of 4 At The Fringe)

Stand Up Shows

In this section we list the television and radio shows that feature the brave soles who are prepared to stand in front of a microphone and tell a succession of stories, jokes and one-liners in an attempt to make the audience laugh. It should be noted that this website does not cover live comedy, see Chortle for gig listings. List of TV & Radio Stand-Up

Panel Shows (picture shows: Mock The Week)

Panel Shows

This genre of comedy is particularly popular in the UK. Also known as Panel Games or Quizcoms, these shows pit teams against each other via quiz questions - but getting the right answers is not normally the real aim, it's just an excuse to be funny! List of Panel Shows

Comedy Drama (picture shows: Love Soup)

Comedy Dramas

Many people get confused about the difference between sitcoms and comedy dramas. Typically, we will class a programme as a comedy drama if it has strong dramatic elements and heavy emphasis on plot - i.e. it isn't just about the laughs. Comedy drama episodes tend to be double the length of sitcom episodes too. List of Comedy Dramas

Satire (picture shows: Bremner Bird and Fortune)

Satire Programmes

These programmes are probably the hardest to define... they tend to set out to ridicule human nature in a comedic way. To be more precise, they hold vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings up to censure by means of ridicule, derision, burlesque, irony, or other methods... mostly with the intent to bring about improvement. Other Genres

Here's some more genres that are used to categorise comedy shows ...

  • Monologue - just one person talking. Most monologues are fit in the comedy drama genre.
  • Improvisation - making things up without a script. Whose Line Is It Anyway? is the king in this genre.
  • Impressionism - Comics copying the voice and/or look of famous people and then pretending to be them. A sub-set of satire.
  • Musical - Comedy delivered via the medium of music. Most of comedies in this genre are satirical.
  • Chat Shows - Most chat shows are boring - but some deliberately aim to be funny, The Graham Norton Show for example.
  • Variety - Shows which provide light entertainment through a range of methods and are too varied to be boxed into one genre. The Morecambe & Wise Show is a fine example of this form of comedy.
  • Factual - The programmes in this genre aren't funny in themselves but we're listing them because they look directly at British comedy.
