The laughs transfer from the big to the small screen, as the Carry On team transfer their bawdy, suggestive and spoof humour to television. Preceeded by the four Christmas specials of 1969-1973 (Cary On Christmas), these thirteen 25-minute episodes each hold a separate story, all of an historical nature. Our Review: Carry On Laughing failed to capture quite the same magic as the films from which it sprang, but was a fair attempt and, if it weren't for the films' high standards overshadowing it, would have been a more successful show. Of course, it is much in the same vein as the Carry On films and so stands up relatively well, but the limits of television and the ITV 25-minute format showed and the programme failed to realise its true potential. |
